Leave street level attitudes behind and descend into the Underground, one of Calgary’s havens for the harder edge set.
Members Only
First of all, in order to shake your stuff at the Underground, you need to be in possession of a membership (or be an invited guest of a member). Card carrying Undergrounders can get discounts on event cover charges, access to extended happy hour specials and more. Memberships are available anytime at the door and are $10. Now, on to the perks of membership.
Gathering of the Clans
Located below (and owned and operated by) the Warehouse, Calgary’s Underground is the place to catch searing guitar and brain-rattling bass, the kind of place some mothers warn their children about. This is where Calgary’s alternative culture thrives, welcoming the goth, the metal-heads, and the punks to mingle amongst themselves. But don’t be scared if you’re missing the requisite piercings and tattoos; the crowd is accepting, and pretensions are checked along with your coat. The Underground is a respite from the frou-frou dance clubs that offer drinks with umbrellas, a beacon to those who long for the grunge and feedback of primal guitar.
Loud and Proud
The Underground features an extensive sound system that is highlighted every Thursday night with Peas and Carrots, a DJ combo that delivers rockin’ tunes and urban groove shakers, while the bar serves up a variety of drink specials. Live music is also paramount at the Underground, with Friday nights that focus on the indie and punk rock scene, and Saturday nights that allow metal and hardcore bands to light it up. No matter the night, the Underground allows Calgarians to bust loose and kick out the jams. Expect it to be loud and expect the crowd to be loving it.
